Chapter 1: Why Rad Techs Have More Leverage Than They Use

Radiology departments run on technologists. When a CT tech calls out, the scanner sits idle. When an MRI tech leaves, the wait list grows. Hospitals know this — and yet most rad techs never negotiate, accept the posted range, and stay flat for years while the market moves around them.

The BLS data tells the real story: the gap between the 25th and 75th percentile for rad techs nationally is over $28,000/year. That gap is not random — it reflects negotiation, credentials, and specialization. Every dollar between where you are and that 75th percentile is recoverable.

Chapter 2: Building Your Rate

Start with your state data from the States tab. Find the 75th percentile — your base target. Then adjust:

• Add $2–4/hr for CT primary registry (ARRT CT)
• Add $3–6/hr for MRI primary or post-primary registry
• Add $4–8/hr for Nuclear Medicine (CNMT)
• Add $1–2/hr for each additional modality cross-trained
• Add $2–4/hr if you are willing to float across modalities on-call
• Add $0.50/hr per year of specialty experience beyond 2 years

Most imaging centers and hospitals have a differential structure for specialized modalities — they just do not advertise it. Here is how to find and claim it:

1. Ask HR directly: "Does the system have a modality differential pay structure?" If yes, find out the amounts. If no, go to step 2.
2. Cite BLS data for your specific modality (from the Modalities tab). MRI and NM data is public — use it.
3. Frame the ask as a market alignment, not a personal request: "The market pays a premium for cross-trained techs. I'd like my rate to reflect that."
4. If cash is truly inflexible, ask for a call differential — extra per hour when pulled to cover specialty modalities you are not primarily assigned to.
